Today (17th Feb 2017) we were witness to horrific views of plumes of smoke over the largest lake in Bangalore, the Bellandur lake. This is not surprising, given the toxic drains that feed into the lake. The frothy drain has already become a tourist attraction. Do we want to be famous for our filth?
The burning of the lake is symptomatic of our current lifestyles and apathy for the ecosystem which we live in. We need to wake up and combine efforts of government, local municipal organizations, environmental scientists, and local civil society to save our lakes.
Which reminds me of the song by Deep Purple
When it all was over,
We had to find another place.
But time was running out,
It seemed that we would lose the race.
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky.
